The new Navi Mumbai International Airport has been running with only domestic flights since December 25th of last year, and is quickly growing. It’s currently handling about 20,000 passengers a day, and there are an average of t50 planes taking off or landing.
One person with knowledge of the situation says they’ve already had 20,000 passengers daily, and expect that number to reach 50,000 from December. Around that same time, they believe there will be approximately 380 planes taking off and landing. This increase is because of a lot of people wanting to fly, and IndiGo’s increased commitment to using the airport. In fact, if things continue as they are, the airport might even do better than expected.
Traffic surge forecast for NMIA
International flights were supposed to start with the summer schedule. Because of the problems in the Gulf, this has been pushed back, and there’s no set date for when they will start while the fighting continues.
IndiGo is showing interest in starting international routes from the airport, with an initial plan for 16 planes to arrive and 16 to leave internationally. Some airlines have even asked about using planes for very long distances. International airlines are having trouble with bringing their large planes to the airport, and people are talking about it, but no final decisions have been made.
International launch pushed back
Currently, IndiGo flights make up about 70% of all the daily flights at Navi Mumbai International Airport. This percentage is going up to around rists 80% as IndiGo adds more flights.
One person with knowledge of the airport said that if IndiGo were to change how they do business, they would bring a lot of passengers to this new airport. They are also important in the plans to start international flights.
Airlines seek clarity on wide-body plans
For now, Navi Mumbai Airport will focus on getting more domestic passengers through, and get ready for international flights when the situation allows. Another person with knowledge of the airport says the number of passengers so far has been a pleasant surprise, and they are confident they will reach their goals by the end of the year.
