Raghav Chadha and Majority of AAP Rajya Sabha MPs to Join BJP, AAP Accuses BJP of Strategic Split

Raghav Chadha is leaving the Aam Aadmi Party and going to the BJP, and about two thirds of AAP's members of the Rajya Sabha (the "Upper House" of the Indian Parliament) are going with him. AAP believes the BJP is using Chadha to divide their party, claiming they are offering rewards and using pressure. This change will significantly alter how much power AAP has in the Rajya Sabha, and will give the BJP more influence.

Raghav Chadha has resigned from the Aam Aadmi Party and will be joining the Bharatiya Janata Party; AAP says this is part of a BJP plan to break up their party in Parliament. Roughly two thirds of AAP’s Rajya Sabha members are now supporting Chadha, which will dramatically change how AAP is represented in the Upper House.

Seven AAP members of Parliament have left, according to AAP leaders, and they say the BJP is responsible for getting them to switch by offering incentives and applying pressure. They’re presenting this as the BJP’s attempt to make Punjab’s current government weaker before important elections.

What happened

Chadha, who was once one of the main public faces of AAP, said he’s leaving because the party has moved away from the values it was founded on. He said AAP is now corrupt and doesn’t live up to its standards, and described himself as being a good person in the wrong political party.

More than two thirds of AAP’s Rajya Sabha members seem to be involved in this change. Ashok Mittal, Sandeep Pathak, Harbhajan Singh, and Rajinder Gupta are all named as being with Chadha in his move to the BJP; we can expect official announcements as they finalize their joining.

Sanjay Singh of AAP said seven of their MPs have defected, and that this is part of a continuing “Operation Lotus” (a BJP strategy to encourage opposition politicians to join them) to undermine the Bhagwant Mann government in Punjab. He says those leaving are betraying Punjab after having been given important positions.

AAP’s charge and BJP’s response

Before these politicians left, Baltej Pannu, who speaks for AAP in Punjab, said the BJP, using Chadha, was trying to split the party in Parliament. He said intelligence reports indicated they were trying to get up to seven MPs to leave, with the promise of being made ministers.

Pannu also stated that the central government’s investigative agencies, including the Enforcement Directorate, are being used to put pressure on opposition politicians. He says AAP’s MPs are still united and these efforts will not work.

The BJP has denied these claims. Vineet Joshi, a BJP leader, said they are completely false and would not admit to trying to cause a split in AAP.

Internal rift sets the stage

There had been growing problems within AAP. Earlier this month, Chadha was replaced by Ashok Mittal as Deputy Leader in the Rajya Sabha, showing that he had a falling out with the party’s leaders.

Chadha said he hadn’t been beaten, but stopped from speaking. Bhagwant Mann, the Chief Minister of Punjab, had already said he thought Chadha was compromised. AAP leaders also said there had been many attempts to get their lawmakers to leave the party before the next election.

Why this matters in the Rajya Sabha

Because AAP will likely lose a large portion of its members in the Rajya Sabha, the party’s overall importance at the national level will decrease. It will have less power in Parliament and it will be harder for them to play a role in the wider opposition.

For the BJP, this shift is a positive development. According to the BJP’s own evaluation, it will give them more numbers and influence in the Rajya Sabha, while hurting a main competitor.

Key positions at a glance

Here are the core claims each side advanced as the crisis escalated:

– AAP says BJP ran Operation Lotus to split MPs

– AAP alleges offers of posts and ED pressure

– BJP calls the allegations a bundle of lies

– Chadha says AAP became corrupt and compromised

What comes next

This move is expected to be complete over the next few days, with official announcements coming soon. Despite all this, AAP leaders say they will continue to focus on governing Punjab.

The BJP says AAP is avoiding talking about the problems with how they are running the government by making these political accusations. The coming days will show how strong the parties are, how well the opposition can work together, and how much progress the BJP can make in Parliament, as the numbers change.
