Anik Dutta: Celebrated Bengali Director Dies After Fall in Kolkata

The Tollywood world is reeling from the news of Anik Dutta's death. The 66-year-old, a director with a fine for satirical and unapologetic cinema, was found to have died in Kolkata after a fall from a terrace. We are still waiting on an inquest to put the pieces together.

It was on May 27, 2026, that the 66-year-old was brought in from Hindustan Park to a hospital in Dhakuria. But by the time he arrived, it was too late. Doctors had to call it. It has been a jolt for an industry that held his work in such high regard.

What happened in Kolkata

Word on the street is that he tumbled from the sixth-floor of a home in Hindustan Park on Wednesday. Gariahat Police have put down a probe at the spot and forensics have been in to have a look.

We don’t know yet if it was a simple misstep or something more. Those in the know at the hospital said his state was dire before he was pronounced dead.

Industry shock and immediate questions

You could feel the ripples in Tollywood as the story broke. Srijit Mukherji, Jeetu Kamal, Manasi Sinha and a few others made their way to the hospital. The body will be kept for a post-mortem while the police wait on the medical side.

They want to know how he came to be on the ground. Here is what they are looking into:

– Was he by himself up there?

Did he come off the roof or a balcony?

Any contact with the trees in the vicinity?

Why Anik Dutta mattered to audiences

Before you had a cult following for his movies, he was in the ad world. You can see where he was coming from: the timing, the barbed one-liners, the kind of story that doesn’t let up. He gave us a mainstream film with some teeth to it.

Then in 2012 he put out Bhooter Bhabishyat. It was a supernatural farce with enough of a political sting to make it a must-see. A lot of people will tell you it was a turning point for Bengali films. You saw the same kind of provocation in Ashchorjyo Prodeep.

Standout works and signature style

Take Aparajito, with Jeetu in the lead and some Pather Panchali in its DNA. It was a hit with the public and the critics alike. And for Borunbabur Bondhu, he was handed a Filmfare for Best Director and another for his writing.

He had a way of getting at the middle-class mind, using a bit of a laugh to point out the absurdity. Even when things were dark in his films, there was a certain fondness to them.

Life off the set and unfinished plans

By all accounts, he has been on his own for a while now; his daughter is in Mumbai. There were some old respiratory issues, too. His partner Sandhi and the girl are left behind.

He was in the thick of making Aparajito 2 when he passed. I remember him saying during the Joto Kando Kolkatay release that it might be his swan song. Hard to hear that in the same way now.

The investigation and what comes next

He was at a place in Hindustan Park on Wednesday before the incident. They have some broken branches to go by, so the police are working out the angle of the fall. Nothing has been put in print from them as of yet.

In the coming days you can expect:

– The post-mortem report

– Some hard numbers from the forensics team

– A word from the cops on where they stand

There is a hole in the room now, in more ways than one. With his mix of wit and a soft spot for the oddities of this city, his work was something to hold on to. Now we are left with the lines and the music that used to be our little inside jokes.

For a man who never shied away from a bold move, the mystery of his last moments is almost banal. The police will get to the bottom of it. But as for his mark on us, that is done. Bhooter Bhabishyat and the like are still here, still having the last word.
