The Election Commission has approved 4,660 auxiliary polling places for the Bengal Assembly election in 2026, and has told 321 polling places to move, and is asking voters to double-check where they vote before they go. With these additions, West Bengal will have 85,379 total polling places as getting ready for the election speeds up.
What changed: auxiliary booths and shifted stations
The extra polling places will be set up with current polling places where over 1,200 people voted in the past. Officials approved the idea on March 28 and the Election Commission’s decision was sent in a letter on April 3, which said all the usual rules must be followed.
The Commission has also permitted moving 321 polling stations so voters can get to them more easily and don’t have to travel so far. Those in charge of the move have been instructed to consider how easy the stations are to get to, the distance people have to go, and what the local roads and buildings are like, to cause as little trouble as possible on election day.
Reasons behind the adjustments
The main goal of these changes is to shorten long lines and delays when too many voters are at one station. The auxiliary stations will spread voters out, so they won’t have to wait as long and busy areas won’t be so packed.
These steps are in response to the fact that West Bengal usually has a very large number of voters and lots of people go to the polling places. By adding more places to vote, the Commission hopes to allow people to vote, and also to make sure the voting is orderly and works well.
How voters can check their polling station
Voters should confirm their current polling place information a good while before the election itself to avoid problems. You can get this information from the official voter help lines, or from the list of voters kept by local officials.
The Election Commission’s website has the updated list of stations; you can go to https://ecinet.eci.gov.in/homepage to search by your name or your voter ID number. Officials were reminded to make absolutely sure that all voters who are going to a moved station are told about it individually.
Security and impartiality concerns raised by the Commission
The Election Commission has pointed out issues with how security will be arranged in the state, and says that security must be given fairly, and following the standard rules. Officials expressed concerns after discovering that police assignments were connected with specific politicians.
Before the election was announced, 2,185 police officers had been assigned to protect 832 members of one political party and 144 others. The Commission stressed that security should not help any candidate, party, or their supporters.
Logistics, accessibility, and election timeline
Besides the number of polling places, the Commission has asked local officials to make lines move better, to improve the most basic things at polling places, and to be sure that elderly people and people with disabilities can get in. These improvements to the way things are organized are important to creating an election where voters are comfortable.
The 294 member assembly will vote in two rounds on April 23 and April 29, and the votes will be counted on May 4. As the campaign continues and the election is prepared for, voters are told to confirm their polling place and plan how they will get there ahead of time.
Check your assigned polling place now to avoid a shock on election day and to make your voting and everyone else’s easier. It is helpful for election officials and ensures the process is clear, efficient and open to all who are able to vote if you find out your details early.
