On Friday, West Bengal Police arrested two individuals, with officials stating that Mofakkarul Islam, a lawyer, was caught at Bagdogra airport when he was about to get on a plane. Investigators had been following him since the incident at Kaliachak.
Arrest at Bagdogra Airport
Islam and another person were held by police at Bagdogra airport in Siliguri as they were about to leave the state. Police say Islam was trying to get away after judges were held inside a local government building for several hours.
West Bengal Police worked with the Criminal Investigation Department and the police in Siligushima to find Islam. They arrested him quickly after the judges were surrounded at the Kaliachak-2 government building in the Mothabari area.
Allegations and Cases Filed
At the Kaliachak police station, three different complaints have been filed against Islam, claiming that he gave speeches that encouraged local people to take part in the surrounding of the judges. Police have a total of 19 cases connected to the Kaliachak incident.
The seven judges were surrounded inside the government building late Wednesday night. Officials are calling this a serious problem with public order, and a direct threat to the safety of people working in the courts.
Investigation and Agencies Involved
The National Investigation Agency is now involved in some parts of the investigation, but West Bengal Police say they will continue their own investigation locally. The state investigators are trying to find out if the incident was planned beforehand, and whether there are other groups involved.
So far 35 people have been arrested in relation to this, including an ISF (Indian Secular Front) candidate who may have been connected to the event. Investigators are still getting statements from people, looking at videos and audio recordings, and working out the order of speeches and meetings that led to the judges being surrounded.
Legal and Public Order Implications
This incident makes people question how to protect judges and the ability of the courts to be independent when so many people are forcing them to do something. Holding judges in a government office disrupts the legal system and could have a long lasting negative effect on how much people trust the legal system.
Officials need to decide what crimes to charge people with, including encouraging the protest and illegally holding people. The court cases will need good proof and may lead to both criminal charges and administrative penalties depending on what each person did.
Next Steps and Calls for Transparency
Police say they will continue to make arrests when they get new information and the prosecutors decide on charges. The investigation by state agencies and the NIA together should show what the organizers, those who stirred up the locals, and those who took part actually did.
People who watch events and local leaders are asking for an investigation that is open and follows the law, protecting people’s rights while also making sure people are held responsible. A clear and factual outcome is needed to discourage similar events and to protect those who carry out justice.
The situation in Malda where the judges were held hostage shows how local problems and bigger security worries come together. As the legal process continues, officials are under pressure to fill in any gaps in the investigation and to bring back a feeling of order that protects both those who work for the government and the law itself.
