People are talking more and more about Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar: The Revenge, and Mukesh Chhabra’s recent stories from behind the scenes have only increased interest. He says that an actor from South India and two from Bollywood didn’t want to play the villain (now played by Akshaye Khanna), and their reasons were, as Chhabra puts it, strange. Dhar is able to get over negative things quickly.
Dhurandhar: The Revenge surges at the box office
The second film in the series came out on March 19th and has already made over 1,500 crore rupees around the world. This spy movie has even more scope and impressive visuals, with Ranveer Singh as Hamza and a huge cast including Sanjay Dutt, R. Madhavan, Arjun Rampal, Rakesh Bedi, Danish Pandor, and Sara Arjun.
The large amount of money the movie has made isn’t the only thing people are talking about. Viewers are really considering the acting, in particular Akshaye Khanna as Rehmaan Dakait and Sara Arjun, who is new to movies, as Yalina Jamali. Chhabra’s detailed description of the bold way the actors were chosen has made people even more interested.
Mukesh Chhabra on a marathon casting mission
Chhabra remembers being shocked, and even a little frightened, after a four-hour reading of the story. The world of Dhurandhar needed a lot of actors and very well-developed characters, shown across many different times and places.
He says almost 400 actors needed to be found for both movies. He put together a team of six people, did a lot of research, and looked for actors everywhere. Dhar, he adds, told him to be ambitious, look for surprises, and be sure that every actor would work for the audience.
This whole process took almost two years, with a lot of activity starting in early 2024. This level of casting is unusual in current Bollywood films, combining famous actors with exciting new talent.
Why Akshaye Khanna as Rehmaan Dakait almost did not happen
The role that has been most discussed in the film almost didn’t happen. Chhabra says two or three actors said no to playing the bad guy before Akshaye Khanna said yes. One was a well-known actor from South India, and two were from Bollywood. They said no because it was an ensemble film and they thought it was going to be “Ranveer’s film”.
Looking back, Chhabra thinks that’s a ‘strange’ way to view things, especially considering how good the role has turned out to be. He thinks those actors will regret their decision now that people and critics are praising Khanna’s scary and skillful performance as Rehmaan Dakait.
He says Dhar’s personality is what kept things going. Chhabra says, “Aditya quickly forgets about negativity.” Instead of worrying about the rejections, the team quickly and clearly changed their plans until they found the right actor.
Ranveer Singh locked as Hamza from day one
While some of the choices took a while, they were always sure about one thing. According to Chhabra, Ranveer Singh was always the first and only choice for Hamza. He agreed to do the part right away, realizing how large and new Dhar wanted the second film to be.
Even as auditions continued and schedules changed, the team kept Ranveer’s energy as the basis for Hamza. Being so certain of this helped create the film’s mood, allowing for a mix of lots of different actors and a strong, appealing central performance.
The search for Yalina Jamali and the power of a fresh face
Yalina Jamali has become the film’s biggest and most exciting find. Chhabra says many actors from the industry contacted him and Dhar, all wanting to be in a scene with Ranveer. But they wanted someone new, someone who hadn’t played roles before and would be immediately convincing as Yalina.
The search was very thorough. Over 1,000 auditions eventually led them to Sara Arjun, whose personality and accuracy improved the role. The team kept the casting secret to create a surprise and let the character, not Arjun’s list of previous work, be the focus when she was revealed.
What the casting saga says about star power and risk-taking
Dhurandhar: The Revenge is a good example of how to balance famous actors with taking risks. The film depends on Ranveer Singh’s popularity, but doesn’t make the story about just him. It uses a large cast to increase the tension, add depth, and give the audience excellent performances.
Chhabra’s explanation shows a larger change in how actors are chosen in Bollywood. Well-known actors are important, but strong, well-acted characters can be the most memorable part of a film. Khanna’s Rehmaan Dakait demonstrates that a scary villain, carefully chosen and played, can be what people remember most about a film.
As the series continues, the story of how the actors were found has become part of its story. From well-known actors turning down roles to discovering exciting new talent, Dhurandhar: The Revenge shows how belief, patience, and being able to change plans quickly can turn a huge idea into a very successful movie.
