The Jammu and Kashmir Police set up a Special Investigation Team to investigate the attempt to shoot Farooq Abdullah – who is also the president of the National Conference – and the former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. Because of how serious and delicate the March 11th event was, the choice to make the SIT was officially made with senior police in charge.
Who is on the SIT and What They Will Do
The order says the SIT will be under the Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Jammu-Samba-Kathua Range. The team has SSP Sanjay Sharma, SP Irshad Hussain Rather, Deputy SP Arvind Kumar Sambyal, and a number of inspectors and station officers from local police departments.
The Inspector General of Police for the Jammu Zone gave the order and told the SIT to do a full investigation. Investigators need to finish the investigation within the time the law allows, and work with other security groups that are involved in protecting the person they are protecting.
What Happened in the Attempted Attack
The attempt happened around 10:10 pm on March 11th as Farooq Abdullah was leaving a wedding event in Jammu. Police state that someone showed a revolver and tried to shoot at very close distance, but was held back by the security with Abdullah.
Officials say the attacker pointed the gun at Abdullah’s neck. Security – like NSG commandos and police guards with the person being protected – quickly moved to turn the weapon away and catch the suspect, so no of the people at the event were hurt.
The Arrest, What the Accused is Charged With, and How He is Being Held
Police named the accused as Kamal Singh Jamwal, 63, from Purani Mandi in Jammu. Gangyal Police Station filed case number 29/2026 under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Sections 3 and 25 of the Arms Act, 1959 after the event.
The accused was put in police custody for five days, and the court ordered a medical check within 24 hours. Investigators are questioning the suspect to find out why he did it and are checking his past and if he has any links to bigger groups.
Worries About Security and How Politicians Reacted
Abdullah, and many other politicians at the event, asked how someone could get past security even with Z+ protection and NSG being with the person being protected. Abdullah said the situation could be a problem with security and asked officials to look at how things are done at public events.
The Deputy Chief Minister and other officials also worried about how many police were at the event. Abdullah’s family and coworkers have asked for full answers on how the attacker got so close and if the usual rules were followed.
What the Investigation Will Focus On and What Comes Next
The SIT will look at why it happened, what order things happened in, problems with the security at the event, and if anyone else helped the accused. Officers will look at CCTV, what people saw, records of where the guards were, and what the accused did and said before the event.
Officials say the investigation will be full and have a deadline. Officials expect the SIT to work with groups that are good at protecting people and to come up with results that lead to better security at important events.
What the Public Thinks and What Information is Being Given Out
A video of the accused talking to police went around a lot on social media, and made the public more interested. Officials are controlling what information is released to be fair to both being open and keeping the investigation and legal steps safe.
The attempt to shoot has caused people to look at VIP protection in the area again. As the SIT continues its investigation, police officials have promised to give a clear and factual account of what happened and to suggest real changes to security where they are needed.
