Farooq Abdullah Calls for Inquiry After Narrow Escape from Assassination Attempt

Farooq Abdullah just barely avoided being killed in a shooting at a wedding in Jammu. He thanked the people who protect him and asked for a proper investigation into why security wasn't better. The event showed how important it is to have better safety at public events, and Abdullah asked for people to stop using language that divides us.

The former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Farooq Abdullah, almost died in an attack during a wedding in Jammu – a really troubling thing that he connected to the strong, deep dislike he thinks exists in our world. In his first full statement, he thanked his security for responding quickly and said a formal inquiry was vital to find out where security went wrong.

Abdullah also said that Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, phoned to ask how he was and promised a full investigation. The long-time political figure, who at first thought the gunshot was a firework, wanted officials to look into why there didn’t seem to be enough police at the place, even though a lot of important people were there.

What the Jammu Wedding Showed

The shooting happened at a wedding reception in the Greater Kailash section of Jammu. As Abdullah was leaving, a single attacker fired from very near by with a gun he was allowed to have. Security officers immediately acted, turning the bullet away and holding the attacker so no more damage could be done.

Police named the person suspected of the crime as Kamal Singh Jamwal, 63, who lives in the area. He was arrested where it happened, and the gun was found. Abdullah said he had no personal problems with anybody and didn’t know what the attacker was hoping to do, making the point that detectives need to figure out the attacker’s purpose and if it was planned.

Afterwards, Abdullah said that although many famous people were there, he didn’t see any police officers visibly present at the venue. He thought this lack of presence was a serious problem that officials should officially check. He said his well-trained security team saved his life.

Abdullah’s Request for an Investigation

Abdullah’s main point was simple: there should be an inquiry. He didn’t present it as something politicians wanted, but as something necessary for public safety. He said a complete look at things could show if the way the event planners, the local police, and his security team worked together was up to the level it needed to be.

He stressed that this look should check to see if standard ways of doing things for VIPs when they’re moving around at public and private places were followed. That includes who is allowed in, checking crowds, managing the area around the venue, and how guns people are allowed to have are handled at parties.

Abdullah also talked about a growing feeling of animosity. He said no religion teaches hate, but only love and respect. While saying he doesn’t feel badly toward anyone, he warned that an atmosphere filled with hate makes it possible for both individuals and groups to be a danger.

What the Central Government and Politicians Said

Abdullah stated that the Union home minister got in touch with him himself and promised a strong investigation. Political figures from all sides criticised the attack and asked for people to be held responsible. This response from both parties shows they all understand that when security around important public people isn’t good, it puts in danger more than just those people.

More and more people are asking for a quick, open investigation, and many want officials to release clear information about the security at the venue, checks of guns, and how long it took to respond. The seriousness of this event, in a city with a difficult history of security, has added to the need for those requests. Although politics in Jammu and Kashmir is usually sharply divided, the close call has brought about a strange agreement – everyone thinks public gatherings need better protection. People agree that fast action by security staff who are trained stopped something awful from happening.

Security Plans and What Public Events Teach Us

Important events usually need security set up in layers. This means the people protecting the person who needs guarding, and the local police, need to work together; they need to agree on where the boundary of the event is, check who the guests are, and have plans for what to do if something goes wrong. If one of these layers isn’t good, or isn’t there, danger goes up – particularly in busy places where one mistake could cause a lot of problems.

Having people allowed to carry guns to social events is a different problem. Being given a licence to have a gun legally doesn’t mean the rules of the place, or the safety of the public, don’t still matter. People who are putting on events, with the local police, can make the rules tougher – like not letting guns in at all, and checking people more when they come in.

The thing that happened in Jammu will likely mean that the usual ways of doing things for private events with important people in them are looked at again. That could mean police officers who have to be at certain events, looking at the risks of each place, and making the people who are putting on the event more clearly responsible for who is on the guest list, who gets in, and what is happening on the site.

The Bigger Situation and the Question of Being a State Again

Abdullah said the attack was part of a bigger rise in people not liking each other. He asked for a new start in what people say to each other in public; for leaders, organisations and people to refuse to use words that stir up trouble. In places where conflict happens often, he said, hatred makes danger worse, turning small things into big incidents.

The head of the National Conference also asked again for Jammu and Kashmir to be made a full state again. He asked the people in charge to see if what they say about things being normal matches what is really happening, where violence that happens now and again, threats from terrorists, and political problems continue to test how well the government works, and how much people trust it.

What This Means for How the Government and Police Work

If an investigation shows the policing at the place was not good enough, it might lead to new ways of protecting events in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly when very important people go to private events. Giving the police more money, training, and being able to talk to each other in real time would be at the centre of any plan to put things right.

For the government, this shows how important it is to balance important people going out to meet the public, with managing risk properly. Being open about what the investigation finds, and clearly making changes, can help people to trust the organisations which are meant to keep people safe.

What Happens Next in the Investigation

The usual steps in an investigation like this are to look at the gun and bullets very closely to find out everything about them, check the history of the person who did it, work out what happened in order, and talk to the security staff and people who saw it. Investigators will also look at video from CCTV and records of what people said to rule out a bigger plan.

The people in charge are expected to look at whether the place had the right controls on who could get in, and whether the police had been told enough in advance. What they find should give a timeline of decisions and what people did, showing what worked and where there were problems.

For Abdullah and other well-known people, when they go to public events in the future will probably have security plans that have been changed. For the public, it will matter most to have a clear answer from the investigators. An investigation which is believable, complete and quick can show what went wrong, and give a plan to stop it happening again.

In the meantime, Abdullah’s message is true beyond the police investigation. He asked people to step back from words which divide, and to promise to be polite to each other. Making security better can reduce danger, but he said that repairing society is the longer way to real safety.
