Priyanka Chopra Reflects on Missing Her Father at Wedding to Nick Jonas

Priyanka Chopra has been thinking about how much she missed her father, Ashok Chopra - who died after fighting cancer in 2013 - when she got married to Nick Jonas. In a talk on Mythical Kitchen, she said Nick is 'the sort of man my dad would have chosen for me, had he been able to'.

Priyanka Chopra talks about her father

Priyanka has often talked of the close relationship she had with Ashok Chopra. A Lieutenant Colonel, he was a consistent, encouraging force in her life and work.

She has a tattoo on her wrist to remember him, and often speaks about his memory in what she says and posts on social media. These things show how much his not being there still affects her at important points in her life.

A love of music connected father and husband

On the podcast, Priyanka said she felt her father would have liked Nick Jonas because they both loved music. ‘My dad’s first love was music – he really loved it,’ she explained, connecting this to her husband.

She called Nick ‘a genius’ and complimented his work in the studio. Seeing Nick make things gives Priyanka new energy, and she feels her father would have been impressed by the way Nick puts music together, writes, and plays.

Creativity as a safe place: the studio

Priyanka admitted she often goes to the studio just to watch Nick at work when she needs to feel better. She said watching him ‘make things out of thoughts and what inspires him, and put them together so well’ is great.

As well as being talented, Priyanka described Nick as ‘a very thoughtful person’ – her opposite, in a good way. She said this balance is what her father would have wanted for her.

Missing him at her wedding – and as a grandfather

Priyanka and Nick married in 2018 at Umaid Bhawan Palace, and had both Hindu and Christian ceremonies to show both their cultures. It was a happy occasion when having family there was very important, and Ashok’s absence was obvious.

Since 2022, Priyanka and Nick’s daughter, Malti Marie Chopra Jonas, has been with them, born by surrogacy. Priyanka has said how she wishes her father could have met Nick and their daughter, and how proud he would have been.

Remembering him and going on with family and work

Priyanka deals with her personal sadness and her public life by remembering her father while she makes family memories and keeps up a busy career. She often talks openly about being a parent, marriage, and what she wants to do with her work – which many fans connect with.

Her latest acting jobs and public appearances show a professional who uses her personal past to give her life purpose. Priyanka does not see legacy as just something from the past, but as a force that still affects what she does and who she is close to.

When she thinks about sadness and thankfulness, Priyanka sees her father’s effect on her as both emotional and artistic. She goes on to carry his tastes, help, and values with her, and finds comfort in music, family times, and the artistic energy she sees in Nick.
