Alia Bhatt’s first look from Cannes 2026 is here, and people are reacting to it immediately as being lovely, graceful, and something that will make her a star. She was seen on May 12th at the Hotel Martinez in a full, flowing ballgown with a print that’s full of the spirit of Audrey Hepburn. L’Oreal Paris officially said she is in Cannes.
The look that set the summer tone
This dress is the sort of thing that can make a dull grey morning on the French Riviera feel as bright and beautiful as late afternoon sunlight. The dress is covered in a pastel watercolour pattern of light green, blue, lavender, and touches of yellow, like an Impressionist painting of a garden, but it doesn’t try too hard to be.
The dress is carefully fitted and shaped in some places, and flows and moves beautifully in others. The top part of the dress has a corset shape with a sweetheart cut and thin straps, and then the skirt is large and flows out.
The standout details people are pointing out:
– Structured corset bodice with a sweetheart neckline
– Thin spaghetti straps meet a billowing, voluminous skirt
– Watercolor print in pastel green, blue, lavender, yellow
– Nude-pink lips, shimmery eyes, and a side-parted bun
Her makeup was simple and fresh. She wore a pale pink lipstick, a very light shimmer on her eyes, and a little blush to give her skin a glowing look. She didn’t wear a lot of jewellery, just small earrings and a few noticeable rings, so the soft, romantic feel of the fabric would be what you noticed.

Power move on arrival
Before the dress, what she wore when she arrived made a statement. Alia arrived in a neat, black and white Carolina Herrera outfit. It included a button-up jacket with noticeable, puffy shoulders and a fitted waist, and with it she wore matching, cropped trousers from the Spring 2026 line by the same designer.
Her bag and sunglasses continued the look of a more traditional, polished style: the Gucci Jackie 1961 Medium Shoulder Bag in black leather and circular sunglasses. She wore Manolo Blahnik Carolyne 70 Black Satin Slingback Pumps, which were a good combination of the sharpness of a business suit and looking relaxed while travelling.

A nod to old Hollywood, with an Indian twist
Her first appearance at Cannes uses the style of classic Hollywood, even down to very little glitter and a neat bun with a parting on the side which brings to mind Breakfast at Tiffany’s without being too obvious. The shape of the clothes makes the glamour, and the way she put it all together suggests it.
Those who have watched Alia for a long time will notice a trend. After the very popular Gucci saree she wore in treading a fusion line of styles this year and looking to support Indian businesses with Indian styles on the world’s biggest stages.

What comes next at Cannes 2026
Alia will be at the opening event on May 12th as L’Oreal Paris’s representative for India worldwide. More people from India are expected at the festival as a whole, with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan likely to be on the red carpet and Karan Johar, Tara Sutaria, Mouni Roy and Ammy Virk are all going. Ashutosh Gowariker, the filmmaker, is part of the official group from India.
The festival starts on May 12th and ends on May 23rd. Because her first look is already popular, all eyes are now on what she will wear next and how she will combine amazing couture designs with the relaxed, breezy style she’s brought to the French Riviera.
What she’s doing is very clear. One outfit says “summer love”, another says “strong in business”, and together they show what she intends to do: make every picture a fashion moment, but make it look natural. It’s this balance that is making her first appearance at Cannes stand out from everything else happening there.
