What’s the appeal? Nostalgia, with a few new wrinkles. When Netflix made it public at their 2026 Upfronts that they were moving forward with the sequel, social media and group chats lit up. A post that did the rounds put it best: Sandler is back in all his roles as star, writer and producer, with Jackie Sandler on the producing side. For those who have been around, it’s the kind of comfort food you’re in the mood for.
Who is back and who is steering it
You’ll see the old faces again. Reports say the cast is rounded out by Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade and Rob Schneider. They had the chemistry in the first two and they’re the main reason to tune in. Sandler is penning the script with Tim Herlihy, as he has for years, but this time Kyle Newacheck is in the director’s chair. It’s a departure from the Dennis Dugan days and you can expect a bit of a different comedic beat.
The new creative pivot
Newacheck and Sandler have been in the room before, on Happy Gilmore 2, Murder Mystery and Game Over, Man!, so there should be some good shorthand on set. As for the rest of the credits, you have the Sandler and Herlihy team, plus Jack Giarraputo, with Kevin Grady and Judit Maull as exec producers.
Here is what is locked in so far:
– It is in development at Netflix.
– Adam Sandler is starring and co-writing.
– Tim Herlihy is co-writing the script.
– Kyle Newacheck is directing.
– Returning cast includes Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade, Rob Schneider.
– Producers include Sandler, Jackie Sandler, Herlihy, Jack Giarraputo.
– Executive producers are Kevin Grady and Judit Maull.
– No release date or trailer yet.
Release date, trailer and where to watch
Don’t go looking for a trailer or a date on the calendar just yet. If you see any video of it online, it’s fan-made; the studio hasn’t put anything out. And when it does come, you won’t be going to a cinema. This one is being made for Netflix, not Sony’s Columbia Pictures like the ones before.
A franchise with proven pull
The numbers tell you why everyone wants this. The 2010 original was a hit with its mix of family mayhem and good times, raking in $272 million. 2013’s follow-up put up $247 million. With a director like Newacheck, you’ll get the same camaraderie but with a little more edge. And since it’s on the streamer, it’ll be right there on day one, which should do wonders for the word of mouth.
What matters for viewers now
Sandler has said the gang would be up for it, and now it’s no longer just a pipe dream. We’ll be watching Netflix for the next move.
