You could say RJ Balaji made a bit of a show of it after Karuppu ran up the numbers to Rs 300 crore around the world. He went and met the star he had in mind for the part back in the day. Since the film hit screens on May 15, 2026, there has been no shortage of chatter from fans.
Why this meeting is some-thing
In the beginning, you might have seen Karuppu as Vijay’s last hurrah before he got into the political game. When he decided to put an end to his acting days, the project found another home. That makes for a nice full-circle moment for Balaji to be on the same side of the table as the man who started it all.
Then there is the way the movie has done. You can quibble over the reviews, but the people were there, and the money was too. It was a risk that paid off in a big way.
A word from Balaji to Vijay
Balaji put some pictures up on X of him and Vijay. In the caption he let on how strange it was to be with the honourable Chief Minister, and offered a thanks for where Karuppu came from.
He didn’t come alone; his wife Divya was with him. It was less of a formality and more of a personal note of thanks. The vibe was all about being grateful, not basking in the win.
How we got from a near-Vijay to a Suriya
If you ask Balaji, the film was put together as a send-off for Vijay. They had a few talks about his move into politics and what his last project would be. In the end, Vijay said no, and Balaji was fine with that.
He had already put two stories in front of him, so he didn’t see it as a closed door. He then made the case to Suriya, who was on board and put in a few of his own to make the script what it is.
Turns out to be a good call. With Trisha Krishnan and even Balaji in the mix, you have a film with some moral fibre and the kind of spectacle you want to see on the big screen.
The story on screen
At its heart, Karuppu is an action drama with a touch of the fantastical. Vettai Karuppu, the guardian deity, puts on a lawyer’s suit to do some good. His job is to stand up to a corrupt system that has a young girl in a lurch for a liver transplant.
Suriya is there, of course, as is Trisha. You will also spot Indrans, Natty Subramaniam, Swasika, Sshivada and Supreeth Reddy in their parts. It’s your old-timey masala with a modern edge to it.
And the politics of it all
Just last month C Joseph Vijay was made Chief Minister, with family and a room full of well-wishers in attendance. For those of us who have been along for the ride, the change from leading man to CM makes Balaji’s post-film visit feel like a bit of history in the making.
As for Jana Nayagan, the one that was to be his last, it has been on ice for five months or more. It only goes to show how close Karuppu was to being the end of the line for him, and how life has a way of moving on.
For a quick run-down of what has happened:
– Karuppu was in theatres from May 15, 2026
– Made over Rs 300 crore in total
– Was in the works for Vijay to begin with
– Now we have a new CM in Tamil Nadu
– A meeting with Divya in tow
It comes down to this: the numbers are one thing, but Karuppu is also about the right idea at the right time. And Balaji’s tip of the hat to Vijay is a fitting end to the story.
