Raghav Chadha has very publicly rejected his own party’s accusations that he didn’t address Punjab’s concerns in Parliament. After the Aam Aadmi Party took him off his position as deputy leader of the Rajya Sabha, Chadha said the accusations are for political reasons and showed evidence of his work in Parliament.
Allegations and party action
The problem became much more intense after people in the party said Chadha hadn’t supported Punjab in the Rajya Sabha. He was replaced as the AAP deputy leader, and some within the party said he had been swayed and was afraid of the Prime Minister. These statements made an already open argument within the party even bigger.
Chadha described the criticisms as something that had been planned and done together. He says the same story was being told by many people, and that this wasn’t by chance. He presented his response as defending what he’s done and questioning why the criticisms are being made.
Chadha’s rebuttal and evidence
Chadha said the claims against him are completely untrue and without a basis in fact, and he shared a video of him speaking in the Rajya Sabha in 2024 about Punjab not receiving money it was owed. He says his work for Punjab is officially recorded and anyone can check it.
He also gave a long list of issues he’s brought up in Parliament: getting the money Punjab is owed from the Rural Development Fund, the falling level of groundwater, the problems farmers are having, and the belief that the Punjab government isn’t getting a fair share of the money. He says he has consistently and substantially worked on these things.
Policy points Chadha emphasized
Chadha mentioned his work on the Nankana Sahib corridor and trying to get a visa-free trip to Nankana Sahib as examples of how he’s used cultural understanding between countries. He also asked for a legal guarantee of the minimum price farmers receive for their goods and said Bhagat Singh should receive the Bharat Ratna (a high honor) – tying these symbolic acts to how Punjab feels about itself.
When it comes to safety and health, Chadha brought up security in border states and the increasing issue of drug abuse in Punjab. He says he’s repeatedly brought up issues of governing, public policy and people’s well-being with the Parliament.
Parliamentary record and public verification
Chadha emphasized that the official record of Parliament is an objective, factual proof of everything he’s done. He’s directing people to the official proceedings and particular clips, and is welcoming the public to look at things for themselves, instead of just listening to opinions from those within a political party. This turns the problem into one about proof, and not just what people say.
Chadha argued that just because something is said over and over doesn’t make it true and said that looking at the official records will settle the dispute. Focusing on the verifiable record moves the argument to what has actually happened in the legislative process and away from personal insults.
Political context and implications
This situation reveals problems within AAP on a national scale as the party tries to be accountable to people and to be seen positively. And for people who vote in Punjab, this is important because it’s about who speaks for the state in Parliament and how well they are able to turn that voice into actual policies.
Chadha finished by saying Punjab is his “responsibility, land and spirit” and he promised to continue to advocate for it. But no matter what is going on inside the party, the real test will be if the issues he raised turn into actual policies and money for Punjab in the next parliamentary meetings.
