Flights have been unreliable for a few days, with hundreds of flights cancelled or delayed. Before adding trains, Railways quickly looked at how many people were travelling through places like New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Patna and Howrah, and then got trains and staff ready to add more space at short notice.
Officials have said that the number of special trains could go up, depending on how many people need them at the time. Areas have been told to use everything they have and to make sure operations are safe, so people who are stuck can get where they need to go quickly and safely.
Where the Special Trains Will Go
Western Railway will have seven special services at a higher price; the routes are Mumbai Central – New Delhi, Mumbai Central – Bhiwani, Mumbai Central – Shakur Basti, Bandra Terminus – Durgapura, Valsad – Bilaspur, Sabarmati – Delhi and Sabarmati – Delhi Sarai Rohilla. Extra trips might be added as demand goes up.
Central Railway is planning the most, with 14 special trains. Important routes are:
Pune – Bengaluru, Pune – Hazrat Nizamuddin, LTT – Madgaon, CSMT – Hazrat Nizamuddin, LTT – Lucknow, Nagpur – CSMT, Gorakhpur – LTT and Bilaspur – LTT.
Areas are sharing times.
South Eastern Railway will run Santragachi – Yelahanka, Howrah – CSMT, and Cherlapalli – Shalimar to deal with the increase in passengers from the east and south.
Airport Authority has been told to put up times so passengers know.
South Central Railway announced special services to deal with the extra rush, including Cherlapalli – Shalimar, Secunderabad – Chennai Egmore, and Hyderabad – Mumbai LTT. More trips might be added depending on how much demand there is from Hyderabad and Telangana.
Eastern Railway is using special trains between Howrah, Sealdah and important places. Recently, Howrah – New Delhi and Sealdah – LTT were used to help travel east-north and east-west when flights were messed up.
Northern Railway has planned 10 special trains to deal with demand to and from Delhi. North Central Railway will also run Prayagraj – New Delhi, while North Western Railway has announced one-trip higher-price trains, including Durgapura – Bandra Terminus.
To help with winter travel from Bihar, East Central Railway is planning trains from Patna and Darbhanga to Anand Vihar Terminal. More services from Gorakhpur are being put on to serve people going north. A Durg – Hazrat Nizamuddin special has also been announced for the weekend.
How to Stay Up-to-Date
Passengers should look at IRCTC and area Railway websites for how the trains are made up, times, stops and if there is space to book. Confirmed social media accounts and the 139 helpline can help with last-minute changes and advice on how to manage crowds.
Airports in several cities are making announcements and using boards to show information about the special trains. People who can’t get on flights are told to go to railway desks at important stations for help at the time and to find out about waitlists.
Prices, Space and Travel Tips
Some services are being run at a higher price to cover running costs. Demand is likely to stay high because of the winter rush and people moving from IndiGo flight cancellations. Booking early, thinking about other places to get on and being flexible about times can improve the chance of a booking.
If travelling with bags after airline problems, allow extra time at stations and use official porters if they are there. Keep digital copies of tickets and IDs close by, and follow advice on platforms to avoid crowds near important junctions.
What This Means For Travellers
Indian Railways special trains give quick help on main routes linking Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Patna and other places. The quick putting in place shows how well the system can take on sudden demand and keep important travel going when there are problems with flying.
While airlines work to make schedules stable and find lost bags, the rail network is giving a good choice for trips that have to be on time. With more than 100 extra trips planned in three days and the possibility of adding more, Railways aims to clear backlogs and make people feel confident about travelling again.
What Will Happen
People in authority will look at how many passengers there are in each city and change what they do accordingly. If cancellations go on, expect more announcements and routes to be extended. For now, the 89 special trains are a crucial way for people stuck to get dependable, affordable travel between cities.
