When the Chief Minister made the change of attire for manager Jagadish Palanisamy’s homecoming, the internet had to have its say. Fans were all over the photos, touting the look as something of a power move that was as unpretentious as it was imposing.
Why the outfit made waves
If you’ve been watching since he was sworn in on May 10th, you know the uniform: black blazer, white shirt, dark trousers. It’s been his thing. So when he put on a proper South Indian get-up, it was bound to be noticed.
It didn’t take long for the clips to go viral. Some are calling it 'veshti swag‘ – a way of showing off that you can be traditional without losing your edge.
The scene at Jagadish’s place
You can see it in the videos: Vijay walks in to some loud cheering and is met with a hug by a relative who can’t hide his pleasure at having him there. Even Kathir is in the frame for a moment or two.
He didn’t let the day end there, either. Later on at the Secretariat, he was in the same veshti and shirt. A little visual surprise for the staff and the public alike.
More than just a manager
Jagadish has been in the room for a while. He’s been running the show for nearly ten years, from the film calendar to the production side of things. He’s put his name on Master and Leo, and has a hand in the likes of Maharaja and Revolver Rita.
He heads up a firm called Route, and the rapport they have is genuine. You can put it down to trust; he was right there with Vijay in Delhi when he was in for a sit-down with PM Modi and Nirmala Sitaraman.
Timing is everything
Vijay has moved quickly. In two years, he’s taken TVK and made them the top dog in the state, besting the DMK and AIADMK where they have reigned for half a century.
So when he put on the veshti this week, it was read as a statement. Whether you’re a backer or a critic, you couldn’t miss it. It was the story of the day for both the film and the politics crowd.
What we’re hearing from the ground:
– Something of a departure from the blazer habit
Carrying the old-world style into the office
The kind of crowd work you don’t see every day
Comfort in his own skin, with or without the suit
And what’s coming up
All the fuss over the clothes hasn’t hushed the talk on his last movie. Jana Nayagan is still in limbo with the censors, so there’s plenty of guesswork on when it will hit the screens.
Word on the street is they’re eyeing June 19 for a release, close to his birthday. We’ll have to wait for an announcement, but that doesn’t stop the fan edits and the hype. The two are hard to separate now.
Put simply, the CM turned a wardrobe choice into a headline. A veshti, a housewarming, a warm welcome – and suddenly the day’s news is set. Now we’re left to watch and see what the CBFC has to say about the film.
