Nitish Kumar Secures Fifth Term as JD(U) President Unopposed, Eyes National Politics

Nitish Kumar has been chosen as the leader of the Janata Dal (United) party for the fifth time, and no one ran against him for the position. This easily being re-elected shows how much power he has in both Bihar and within his party. While he's now looking more at what's happening nationally, he's still in charge of Bihar's plans for improvement, something he's demonstrating by traveling around the state with the Samriddhi Yatra. At the same time, the BJP is preparing for someone new to be in charge in Bihar.

The JD(U) confirmed by March 22nd that nobody else had applied for the job. After a check of applications on March 23rd, and a final chance to pull out by 11 a.m. on March 24th, it was obvious he would win.

Unopposed Mandate and Formal Announcement

Aneel Prasad Hegde, who used to be a member of the Rajya Sabha, officially said that Nitish Kumar had won and gave the paperwork saying so to Sanjay Kumar Jha, who is currently the working president of the JD(U). This happened at the party’s main office in New Delhi and many important leaders were there.

Nitish Kumar wasn’ even at the announcement because he is traveling all over Bihar on the Samriddhi Yatra. This journey is to tell people about the government’s detailed plans for development between 2025 and 2030. Sanjay Jha, who suggested Nitish Kumar for the position, took the paperwork for him.

Those at the event were Rajiv Ranjan Singh (also called Lalan Singh) and Ram Nath Thakur, who are both in the Union ministry. Also there were Devesh Chandra Thakur, Shrawan Kumar (a minister in Bihar), Lovely Anand (a member of Parliament), Sanjay Gandhi (a member of the Legislative Council) and other prominent leaders.

Nitish Kumar first became the JD(U) president in t 2016 and was re-elected in 2019, but he left the role in 2020. After Lalan Singh resigned in December 2023, before the 2024 election for the Lok Sabha, he took over again and now has been confirmed for another term.

A Fifth Term Cements Nitish Kumar’s Grip on JD(U)

Nitish Kumar has been chief minister of Bihar for the longest amount of time of anyone, and he’s been sworn in ten times. He was just elected to the Rajya Sabha for the first time, which means he’ll have a bigger say in what happens nationally and in forming groups of political parties.

Because he was chosen without opposition, the JD(U) is more stable as Bihar prepares for a new leader. Nitish Kumar has decided to work in national politics after being chief minister for nearly twenty years. The BJP, which has the most members in the Bihar Assembly, will likely choose the next chief minister.

Organizational Continuity During Political Transition

This would be the first time the BJP has had the chief minister in Bihar, even though they’ve been in government with the JD(U) since 2005 (with only short breaks in 2013 and 2022). How well these parties work together and how smoothly things continue to run in Patna will be tested during this change.

Nitish Kumar will likely resign from his seat in the Bihar Legislative Council since you can’t be a member of two Houses of Parliament at once. Leaders in the party have also said his son, Nishant Kumar, should become more involved in politics. What he will do is still to be determined as the leadership change happens.

Sanjay Kumar Jha said the JD(U) was created by Nitish Kumar and that its success is tied to the overall progress of Bihar, from the time when Bihar and Jharkhand were one state (called Samata Party) to the founding of JD(U) in t 2003.

Allies and Veterans Rally Behind Leadership

Lalan Singh said there was a long struggle, starting in a time of chaos, that finally got better in 2005. He says Nitish Kumar helped Bihar go from being hopeless to having hope. Umesh Kushwaha, the president of the JD(U) in Bihar, also praised how the party has done under Nitish Kumar’s leadership.

The fact that Nitish Kumar wasn’t at the event in Delhi shows that his most important thing right now is the Samriddhi Yatra. This campaign has a plan for fast, fair growth by 2030, it’s a way to get people to support the party and it’s a way to present the JD(U)’s approach to running the government.

Policy Focus: Samriddhi Yatra and the 2025-2030 Roadmap

As the head of the party, Nitish Kumar can make sure the party’s plans match Bihar’s development goals. He will also have to manage relationships with allied ministers and lawmakers to make sure things keep moving forward as the leadership changes in Patna.

The fact that he was chosen without opposition shows the party is united at a crucial moment. It gives Nitish Kumar more power in making alliances and a solid base for working nationally now that he’s in the Rajya Sabha.

What the Unopposed Verdict Signals for 2026-27 Politics

The important things to watch are the BJP’s choice for chief minister, who will be in the new government, and how the JD(U) will reorganize. People will be looking at how Nitish Kumar manages his national duties, leading the party, and making sure Bihar’s development plans are carried out.

For the JD(U), the goal is to keep the coalition working together, to continue with current policies and to turn the aims of the Samriddhi Yatra into real, measurable achievements. Nitish Kumar getting this new approval gives the party a leader they know as Bihar enters a very important political time.
