TMC Nominates Diverse Slate for Rajya Sabha: Kumar, Supriyo, Guruswamy, Mallick

The Trinamool Congress has chosen Rajeev Kumar, Babul Supriyo, Menaka Guruswamy, and Koel Mallick to run in the Rajya Sabha elections. The range of people chosen shows the party's plan to use knowledge of the law, politics, and culture to make their position in parliament better - and to get votes from more people.

The Trinamool Congress – the TMC – has put forward four people for the coming elections to the Rajya Sabha; this shows a combination of legal, administrative, political and cultural ability. The party announced the choices on its social media, naming Rajeev Kumar, Babul Supriyo, Menaka Guruswamy and Koel Mallick as its candidates for the Upper House.

Announcement and party statement

The TMC described the choices as a thank you to its beliefs in being strong and to its dedication to the rights of people. The party wished them well and said it was sure the candidates would keep up the party’s history and show respect for the public in the Rajya Sabha.

The announcement – on X – came before a very important time for state assembly elections. The timing shows that Rajya Sabha elections are often useful for both what a party does in parliament, and what message it sends to voters in state politics.

Political context and opposition response

People against the TMC quickly criticised the choices, with the state branch of the BJP asking about how well the candidates represented different parts of the region. Those who disagreed said that several of the people chosen were not from Bengal, and saw this as a test of the TMC’s stated regional priorities.

The choices for candidates have become a topic in bigger arguments about who people are, how the country is governed, and how people are held responsible for their actions. With state elections coming up, the choices also seem to be a planned attempt to get more people to support the party, and to make sure it has the support of different groups of voters.

Party planners seem to have wanted people with a good name, rather than just people from the region. This mix is to bring different strengths to debates in parliament, while also looking inclusive to people across the country.

Rajeev Kumar: from policing to Parliament

Rajeev Kumar used to be the head of police in West Bengal and at one time was police chief in Kolkata. He has recently retired, and is still a well-known person in state security and in running the state.

During his time in the job, Kumar was both praised and caused trouble – including in high-profile investigations where what he did led to state leaders publicly showing their support for him. His nomination shows a plan to change his experience in running the police and in getting information, into power in the parliament.

Menaka Guruswamy: legal expertise for the Upper House

Menaka Guruswamy is a leading lawyer who has a lot of experience in the Supreme Court. Her work in court has included very important cases about the constitution, and representing important people in the state.

The TMC seems to think that Guruswamy’s legal skill will be good for watching what parliament does, and for debates. Her being in the Rajya Sabha could make the party’s voice stronger on protecting the constitution, looking at laws, and on difficult changes to the law.

Babul Supriyo and Koel Mallick: political experience and cultural reach

Babul Supriyo has experience of being a member of parliament on a national party’s list – winning seats in the Lok Sabha in 2014 and 2019, then changing which party he was in, and now being a member of the state assembly. His nomination shows he is going back to national politics, as someone who is good at campaigning.

Koel Mallick – a famous Bengali actor – adds cultural meaning and will be well-known in elections. Her being well-known can help the TMC get the support of women, young people, and people who like regional films and popular culture.

When you look at the four people chosen, they are a planned mix of skills and symbols. For the Trinamool Congress, the group aims to get a balance of experience, strong legal skills, and what the public wants, as it fights the Rajya Sabha elections and gets ready for the state’s election plans.
