It happened at the Katara Hills residence as George was trying to make his exit after a few words with the media. He says a car ran over his foot as he was getting in, and in response, he put his hand down hard on the bonnet.
How the scene unfolded
“Who is going to answer for this? Do you want to see me killed? My foot was run over,” he told the reporters, in some discomfort.
George had come to put in an appearance for Singh while the investigation is in full swing. The reporters were on him about the family’s stance when he came out. I put to him if they were planning to file anything with the court, and he was short with me: “What good will our reply do?” He wouldn’t say more.
Key points from Friday’s face-off:
– Lawyer alleged a vehicle ran over his foot
– He accused reporters of risking his life
– He said, ‘What difference will our reply make?’
– FIR names Samarth Singh and Giribala Singh
Why the case has gripped attention
All of this is against the backdrop of the 33-year-old Noida woman’s death. She was found hanged at her in-laws’ in Bhopal on May 12. Her side of the story is one of dowry harassment and abetment; the Singhs have it that she was a drug addict. You can see why the case has been so hard to look away from.
Police action and charges
The MP Police have already put an FIR on the table for both Samarth and Giribala Singh. We are talking Sections 80(2), 85 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, not to mention the Dowry Prohibition Act.
What comes next
You could call what we saw on Friday a microcosm of how things are. It’s a sign of the kind of hard-nosed legal wrangling we can expect to come. For the time being, the police are still looking into it, and there is no letting up in the public’s interest.
