UltraTech Cement Achieves 200 MTPA Capacity, Largest Outside China

UltraTech Cement now has the ability to make over 200 million tonnes of cement a year in India - more than any other company in the world outside of China. They got this large amount of ability by adding cement grinding units and plan to grow even bigger. UltraTech is very focused on being environmentally responsible and helping with big building projects that help India develop.

UltraTech Cement has now gone past 200 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of cement making ability in India, which makes it the largest cement company in the world, if you don’t count China. The company reports 200.1 MTPA in India and a total of 205.5 MTPA worldwide when you include their cement plants in other countries.

Milestone and recent capacity additions

To reach this milestone, UltraTech opened three new grinding units that can produce a combined 8.7 MTPA. These are running in Shahjahanpur, Patratu and Vizag and are designed to work with the amount of cement needed in each of those regions, for simpler delivery.

The company points to how quickly it has gotten larger. It took 36 years to get to 100 MTPA in t2019, but the next 100 MTPA was added in less than seven years. This shows they are doing a good job and that demand for construction is increasing across India.

New grinding units and regional supply strategy

The plant in Shahjahanpur will supply cement to the north of India, Patratu is focused on the industrial area of Jharkhand, and Vizag will improve supply to the coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh. Being in these particular places will lower transport costs and allow them to get cement to local building projects faster.

UltraTech built these units to help with fast-growing areas of housing and infrastructure. These additions let the company serve major projects and more distant areas in a better way, while balancing the amount of cement supplied and needed across the country.

Expansion trajectory, capex, and future targets

Their total capacity is now 205.5 MTPA, and 5.4 MTPA of that comes from their businesses in the UAE, Bahrain and Sri Lanka. UltraTech is continuing to expand and is putting over 16,000 crore rupees into projects to do so.

The company’s goal is to have over 240 MTPA of total capacity in the near future. Managers say the quick expansion is thanks to increasing their own production and buying other companies, and shows they will continue to invest to get more of the construction boom.

Role in India’s infrastructure and sustainability focus

UltraTech says their cement is in one in every three houses, two in every five kilometers of concrete roads built by NHAI, and four in every five kilometers of metro rail. They have also supplied materials to major things like the new parliament building and important city transport projects.

Along with making a lot of cement, UltraTech stresses being environmentally friendly. They are working on lowering CO2 released per tonne of cement, using more alternative fuels, and encouraging environmentally friendly building. These actions are meant to help the environment and support India’s long-term goals for building infrastructure.

UltraTech’s move to 200 MTPA shows what’s happening in general: cities growing quickly, many public and private infrastructure projects planned, and companies in manufacturing willing to invest a lot. For those who invest money and those making government policies, this shows both chances to make money and the need to continue to focus on building in a sustainable way as the amount of cement available increases.
