BMW has nudged luxury buying habits in a new direction. The brand delivered 9,075 cars in the first half of 2026 in India, its best H1 ever, driven by rear-seat friendly long-wheelbase choices and a sharp rise in EV adoption. One in every four BMWs sold was electric, signalling a clear buyer shift.
What buyers chose in H1 2026
Rear-seat space won big. Long-wheelbase models took a 52 percent share of BMW’s H1 volumes at 4,428 units, up 24 percent year-on-year. That aligns with India’s chauffeur-driven preference, where extra knee-room and easier ingress matter more than outright sportiness.
BMW’s LWB spread now spans the iX1 e-SUV and the 5 Series and 3 Series sedans, with the next-generation X5 also slated to arrive in LWB guise. Local assembly adds another layer of appeal by keeping duties in check. The iX1, priced at Rs 51.40 lakh ex-showroom, is the most accessible LWB option.
EV momentum moves from niche to normal
Electric mobility is no longer a sideshow for luxury buyers. BMW sold 2,359 EVs in H1, advancing 78 percent year-on-year and accounting for 26 percent of its passenger vehicle sales. The company also noted that one in every four cars it sold in the period was an EV.
BMW Group India said it continues to lead the luxury EV market with a 69% share. President and CEO Hardeep Singh Brar credited a decisive push on electric mobility for the surge, adding: ‘We are confident of driving the momentum for the rest of the year.’
Here are the headline numbers buyers will care about:
– 9,075 deliveries in H1, up 17 percent year-on-year
– 2,359 EVs sold, up 78 percent year-on-year
– LWB cars: 52 percent share, 4,428 units
– SUVs: 5,926 units, up 35 percent year-on-year
– Mini: 504 units, over 70 percent growth
SUVs and Minis keep the pace
Sporty practicality had its moment too. Combined BMW and Mini SUV deliveries reached 5,926 units in H1, marking a 35 percent jump versus last year. That reinforces the ongoing pivot to high-riding, family-friendly luxury with a premium badge.
Within the group, Mini posted 504 units with over 70 percent growth. The Countryman remained its top draw, and demand for the new C trim was described as strong. All 2026 special editions, including the Mini Cooper S Victory and GP Inspired, plus the Cooper S Convertible JCW Pack, are sold out.
What it means for buyers next
The momentum did not slow in the April-June window either, with 4,507 deliveries in the quarter. BMW’s 2026 plan includes six all-new cars, four facelifts and 17 product enhancements, indicating month-on-month freshness across segments.
New arrivals already include the X3 30 xDrive, M2 CS, M440i Convertible and X6 M60i. Facelifts of 4 cars are slated for this year. BMW Group India also aims to reach buyers outside the top metros, with plans to expand to 10 new cities in 2026.
For shoppers, that translates to more choice, easier access and shorter wait times:
– More EVs and LWB options across price points
– Wider showroom footprint beyond big-city hubs
– Frequent updates to keep line-ups current
