Why the franchise keeps winning hearts
Mohanlal puts it in a nutshell: “Under the mystery, it is a story of family, love and survival.” That is why George Kutty has been with us for so long. He is thankful for the warmth shown to him and happy to see Drishyam 3 in the hands of viewers around the world via Prime Video. Over at the platform, they are feeling it too. Manish Menghani, who heads up content licensing for Prime Video in India, says it is something of a rarity in our cinema to have a tale from Malayalam go the distance like this. “George Kutty is not just a character anymore,” he says. “He is in the collective imagination of Indian cinema.”
A tenser, more intimate chapter
Jeethu Joseph is ratcheting up the pressure, but he is also going in on a personal level. The writer-director wanted to get inside the head of a man like George Kutty, a father who has to live with the fear and the consequences of the calls he has made to keep his own safe.
In Jeethu’s view, this is the most layered of the lot, in an emotional sense. He is interested in the toll these things have taken on George, not just in what he does, but in what it has done to him. On paper, George has the life he wanted after Drishyam 2, even if he has put his past on the big screen for everyone to see. But you don’t put away the ghosts that easily. When a couple of journalists come calling to ask about the movie’s real-life side, the quiet is broken. Things get dicey when a marriage plan for his daughter Anju is set up to be a trap. With old adversaries in the mix and the family on edge, the guardian has to use every bit of his wits to hold the line for the ones he is tied to by blood and by secret.
Cast, makers, and continuity
Drishyam 3 is the work of Jeethu Joseph, and it has Mohanlal, Meena and Siddique back in the fold, so you are in familiar territory. Put out by Pen Studios and Panorama Studios and produced by Antony Perumbavoor of Aashirvad Cinemas. The team has been letting a little information out to stoke interest without spoiling the fun. That is the trick of the trade for this series, and they have it down here. So with the news from Prime Video on June 13, the clock is ticking. Come for the puzzle or the feelings, you will want to be there on June 18, 2026. And for the uninitiated, it is as good a time as any to make the acquaintance of George Kutty in his element.
