Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the U. S. President Donald Trump’s Gaza plan’s second phase is ‘close’ and added he will be meeting Trump here later in January in order to officially fix the details. The talks were seen by Netanyahu as a way to peace and the envious end of the Hamas rule in the enclave.
What the second phase would do
Netanyahu said that the second phase will also focus on the demilitarization of Gaza and the disarmament of Hamas, with the help of an international security force. It is expected that an interim technocratic Palestinian government will be formed to take care of the daily affairs that will be seen over by an international ‘board of peace.’
He promised the deployment to be starting at the month’s end if everything goes right. It was said that the second phase ruled by Netanyahu was going to be tough but achievable and he even mentioned that not a lot of people believed the first phase would be realized.
The third phase will broadly be about converting hostile intentions to friendly ones by taking advantage of low occupation and the exodus of most of the Israeli settlers by doing social work on a massive scale.
Status of the first phase and the truce
The violence in Gaza has been mitigated but not stopped since the truce came into effect on October 10. Netanyahu said, almost the first part of Trump’s plan done, waiting only for the last contemplation of the release of the missing body of the Israeli.
The one whose body is left informs the family they should leave the dead and not start a war over it”, Palestinian source told media.
Hamas reported that many of the remains are still trapped under the rubble from a two-year invasion by israel. The israel official warned that if the slow process continues, they might either resume the siege or limit the aid Hamas has access to.
Trump’s Gaza Plan Gate-Crashes
Trump’s multistage framework for Gaza was under negotiations for quite some time now. Supported by a ceasefire agreement as well as the release of hostages, the President’s approach was based on the deployment of an international force to secure Gaza and a temporary administrative entity. The idea was that the ‘board of peace’ would provide the new entity with oversight and legitimacy.
The people who were participating in the preparations for the architecture explained that the Palestinian political process will be allowed to develop over time. Although the world is currently talking about the security and good governance in the short run, the door will be kept open for diplomatic talks.
German endorsing and the overall global definition of the issue
Someone admitted that Merkel repeated Germany’s total concern for the safety of Israel and announced that Berlin is favoring the stage of this issue. In the near future, the crew of the German field hospital is going to supervise the regional centre and German-speaking officers and diplomats will hold key positions in the U. S.-led coordination center. Furthermore, Berlin is elevating its assistance fund for Gaza.
The spokesperson also laid stress on the fact that Germany is still very much for a two-state resolution, but the official acceptance of the independent Palestinian state would ideally and properly reach its final stage when reached the end of a talk. He further explained that he heard nothing about the European Union’s possible sanctions against Israel.
Germany had previously halted the delivery of certain military equipment to Israel, not lifting the ban until the truce was declared. Netanyahu responded he had no intention to visit Germany, citing fears that an International Criminal Court arrest warrant capital had been activated against him for the war crimes he committed.
The situation with Netanyahu from the legal and political aspect
Netanyahu has stated that he intends to remain active in politics even if he is given a presidential pardon while standing trial in his corruption case. A pardon has been asked from President Isaac Herzog by this ex-PM, who claims that his court-mandated presence has a negative effect on the governance, and therefore a pardon would be good for the country.
There hasn’t been any record of a presidential pardon being granted during a criminal trial in Israel. Netanyahu has not confessed to any crimes in the cases where he is accused of accepting bribes, fraud, and breaching the trust, and his counsellors are quite positive that the trial will result in his acquittal.
The president was pressed by the ex-U. S. president in favor of the pardon even before the request made by Netanyahu’s camp. The opposing politicians think that after the pardon, Netanyahu should not participate in politics or should at least confess, but the others demand early elections.
Reflections on Security and Humanitarian Concerns
The Israeli military said that it had killed a militant who had approached soldiers near the Yellow Line that is the border separating the Israeli-controlled and the rest of Gaza. According to local Gaza health officials, over 370 Palestinians have died since the ceasefire commenced.
The Health Ministry of Gaza has recorded the deaths of at least 70,360 Palestinians since the war began. The ministry does not make a distinction between civilians and combatants. Israeli officials reported that on October 7, 2023, Hamas had killed about 1,200 people and also made more than 250 people hostages.
What to watch next
During the Netanyahu-Trump meeting, the two will discuss concrete plans and schedules for the second stage of the Trump Gaza peace plan, as well as the demilitarization of the Gaza Strip, the deployment of international troops, and the establishment of an interim, technocratic government.
If the obstacle is surmounted, we anticipate that the year-end will see the appointment of a panel of an international nature that is to lend a helping hand with the Gaza situation. Nevertheless, the threat of conflict resuming would be very much on the cards, should the promises be broken.
