More than 160 websites, running either illegitimate or pirated streaming and downloading activities of popular films and TV shows, such as Friends, Stranger Things, Squid Game and Wonder Woman, are to be made inaccessible as per the Delhi High Court decision. Justice Tejas Karia provided temporary relief in response to a plea made by a claimant asserting that it was the copyright holder or had exclusive distribution rights in India.
The claimant informed the bench that the offender websites were providing access to a wide range of titles through illegal means, the selection ranging from sitcoms and drama series to massive cult movies. The details of the complaint included the extensive list of titles that were being streamed or downloaded without the legal right. The lawyers of the claimant, on the ground of such activity causing a large amount of damage and continuous loss to the rights holder’s intellectual property and commercial income brought about by the said titles, demanded the revocation.
The court observed that the first to forty-seventh Defendants, who were mostly the owners and business partners of the websites, were all temporarily banned from performing any of the following actions- hosting, streaming, reproducing, distributing, making available to the public or otherwise communicating the copyrighted works of the Claimant. The order, which was dated on December 18, 2025, condemned these actions as explicit violations of copyright and presented immediate relief to stop the continuous unauthorized exploitation.
Key feature of the order is protecting against mirror websites
A prominent aspect of the order is the so-called “dynamic injunction.” It means that the court not only knows very well that the closure of one pirate site often leads to a plethora of mirror sites or similar substitutes that pop up practically instantly. Therefore, the injunction is not limited to the then identified websites, but also to the newer forms that may be available in the future.
This method is intended to deal with the piracy problem in a full-fledged manner by allowing for the instantaneous implementation of legal activity against alternate domains and mirror sites without the necessity of a completely new court order for each instance. These actions are more and more being resorted to by the courts as a way of making enforcement against fast-changing online networks easier.
Big move against digital piracy! 🚫
The Delhi High Court has ordered the blocking of websites illegally streaming popular shows like “Stranger Things” & “Friends.” This ruling reinforces strong judicial protection for copyright in the digital space. ⚖️

Some injunctions in place that have an impact
Piracy not only results in an immediate loss of revenue, licensing, and distribution, but it also has a negative effect and creates problems for future investment decisions. The court pointed out that, without proper and immediate relief, the rights holder could incur severe and irreparable damage. The shutdown of access to the platforms offering the infringing content is equally beneficial, as it is a way of ensuring that the commercial value of copyrighted content is maintained while legal distribution channels are in operation.
Implementation of this measure cannot be done without the support of registrars, platform mediators and ISPs. Courts are empowered to issue orders for domain registrars suspending the respective domains and ISPs to block the access but it is a frequent practise of arena owners to move to new domains, use proxies and VPNs. The dynamic injunction delivers a response time reduction but still it does not end the technical cat-and-mouse game completely.
Wider implications for policy and business
The judgment is a strong indication of the law adapting to the new digital era as far as intellectual property rights are concerned. The dynamic injunction is one of the regulators’ and rights holders’ tools whose very use is complemented by a few others, such as very easy and very efficient notice and takedown system, cross-border cooperation, and technological and almost foolproof mechanisms like watermarking and content identification.
From a business point of view, safeguarding registered works helps foster a constant flow of investments into the production and distribution sectors. As far as the clients are concerned, the best option to mitigate the piracy issue is introducing cheap and easily accessible legal alternatives through the solid legal framework beforehand.
Draft of the new copyright directive and similar laws
One striking figure providing the example of the need for new laws is the report from the Intellectual Property Office (IPO). The report puts the United Kingdom as the EU’s largest market for pirated products with almost twice the size of the German market and three times the size of the French one. Thwarting piracy is an issue that has been looming over us for quite some time due to the fact that it is actually the fastest growing “infringement market.”
The Delhi High Court’s injunction to block more than 160 pirate websites and its adaptive relief are massive legal steps taken to safeguard digital content. Its success for a long time will definitely depend on the strict imposition of the law and the industry of legitimate, user-friendly options which will cater to the needs of people in terms of what they want to watch.
