Two postponements have left the GATE 2027 registration unopened. IIT Madras has also put in place a new rule: all Indian applicants are to register via DigiLocker. The portal says revised dates are coming ‘soon’, but rather than adopt a wait-and-see approach and risk last-minute trouble, students and institutions would do well to be ready.
What has changed for applicants
In this cycle the institute is insistent that Indian candidates apply through DigiLocker. IIT Madras has recommended that one make or update an account before the window is available to sidestep any login or verification delays at the point of submission.
The logic behind the procedural change is to centralise identification. In practice the message is straightforward: get your DigiLocker set up and confirm you can access your credentials.
Registration timeline remains uncertain
We have seen the application start date moved on two occasions. An initial plan for August 14 was pushed to the 27th, and now it is deferred with no replacement date. The official GATE 2027 portal indicates fresh dates will be put out ‘soon’.
No explanation has been offered by IIT Madras for this second deferment, so candidates are well advised to keep an eye on the portal.
Documents to keep ready
There is still some waiting to be done, but having everything in the proper format will save time once the form is live. IIT Madras has made clear what may be needed for upload during registration.
Applicants should have the following on hand where they apply:
– Any annexures for a scribe or compensatory time
– A UDID or PwD certificate as the case may be
– Dyslexic certificate
– SC or ST certificate
– A valid photo ID in scanned form
– Signature and a recent photograph
Before uploading, see that the files conform to IIT Madras specifications. Do not forget that the original photo ID must be brought to the examination centre for GATE 2027.
Fees and exam schedule
When the regular window opens, the fee is Rs 2,000 for male and unreserved candidates; for females and those in the SC, ST and PwD brackets it is Rs 1,000. Payment is due with the application.
The delay in registering does not affect the exam dates. As the online schedule shows, the test will be held on February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21, 2027. One can find the timetable for each paper on the official site.
Immediate actions for candidates
Even if the registration date is in limbo, there is no reason for preparation to be. To lessen any friction at submission, use the time to:
– Put in order your DigiLocker account
– Make sure certificates are clearly labelled and scanned
– Verify the format of your photo and signature
– Follow the official portal for announcements

For institutions running orientation or help desks, the focus should be on DigiLocker onboarding and document review. Some clear direction on category certificates and the like will head off errors the moment the window is open.
