A tragic incident at Gandhi Memorial Hospital, Rewa, has raised serious questions about patient safety and the quality of emergency maternal care after a 25-year-old woman, Kalpana Mishra, and her newborn died during childbirth.
Kalpana, a resident of Hatwa village in Rewa district’s Baikunthpur area, had been admitted to the hospital’s Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department for her first delivery. According to reports, she was admitted in the early hours of August 26. She and her newborn subsequently died during treatment.
The incident has sparked protests by the woman’s family, who have accused hospital staff of negligence and demanded strict action against those responsible.
A Disturbing Video Emerges
The controversy intensified after a video recorded shortly before Kalpana’s death surfaced on social media.
In the footage, the visibly distressed woman can be heard pleading with her family to take her away from the hospital. She expresses fear about the treatment she was receiving and repeatedly asks for help.
The video has caused widespread public outrage.
However, the recording by itself does not establish the medical cause of death or prove negligence. Those questions will have to be determined through the official investigation, medical records and post-mortem findings.
Family Alleges Negligence
Kalpana’s family has alleged that she repeatedly complained about her deteriorating condition but did not receive adequate or timely attention.
They have also accused doctors and nursing staff of inappropriate behaviour and demanded criminal and departmental action against those found responsible.
The family reportedly staged a protest outside the hospital following the deaths, demanding accountability.
The allegations, however, remain allegations at this stage.
Hospital Rejects Allegation of Negligence
Hospital authorities have disputed the family’s version.
Gandhi Memorial Hospital Superintendent Dr Rahul Mishra said that Kalpana had been treated according to medical protocol and that there was no negligence on the part of the doctors. He said the allegations were being investigated.
Reports indicate that Kalpana’s medical condition was already serious when she was admitted. Some reports citing hospital records say she had severe pre-eclampsia and other complications, making the medical circumstances surrounding the death particularly important to establish through expert examination.
Four Hospital Staff Members Suspended
The Madhya Pradesh government has since taken departmental action.
The latest reports say two doctors and two nursing officers have been suspended following the deaths.
The suspended doctors have been identified in reports as Dr Sonal Agarwal, from Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Dr Nidhi Pandey, from Anaesthesiology. Two nursing officers who were on duty have also been suspended.
This is significant because the initial reports had mentioned the suspension of two nursing officers; subsequent reporting indicates that disciplinary action was expanded to include two doctors as well.
Five-Member Committee to Investigate
A five-member inquiry committee has been constituted to examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The investigation is expected to examine the treatment provided to Kalpana, the decisions taken by the medical team, the timing of the intervention, anaesthesia and other medical factors, as well as whether established protocols were followed.
Post-mortem examinations have also been conducted, with authorities stressing that the precise cause of death must be established through medical and investigative findings.
Madhya Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister Rajendra Shukla has directed officials to conduct a fair and detailed inquiry and said strict action should follow if anyone is found responsible.
What About the ₹3 Lakh Allegation?
One of the most serious claims circulating online is that the family was allegedly asked to pay ₹3 lakh for the operation.
However, this specific allegation has not been independently established in the reliable reports reviewed for this article.
Similarly, the claim that a nurse performed the operation after a doctor allegedly refused treatment because of money has not been confirmed by the hospital, government authorities or the major reports reviewed.
These allegations should therefore be treated as claims requiring investigation, rather than established facts.
If investigators find evidence that treatment was deliberately withheld because the family could not pay, that would raise extremely serious questions of professional misconduct and potentially criminal liability. But that determination must come from evidence rather than social-media claims.

Was Kalpana’s deteriorating condition recognised in time?
Was the correct treatment administered according to protocol?
Was the medical team adequately staffed?

Could the deaths have been prevented?
These are precisely the questions the inquiry must answer.
Accountability Must Follow Evidence
The suspension of four staff members is an important preliminary administrative step, but suspension is not the same as a finding of guilt.
The inquiry should be allowed to examine medical records, duty rosters, operation-theatre records, anaesthesia records, laboratory reports, blood-transfusion records, CCTV footage where available and statements from the family and hospital staff.
If negligence or misconduct is established, those responsible should face appropriate departmental and legal action.
If the investigation finds that the medical team followed accepted protocols and that the deaths resulted from unavoidable complications, the findings should also be made public to prevent misinformation and ensure that medical professionals are not blamed without evidence.
